Philadelphia 76ers at Indiana Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers play host tonight to a conference rival in the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers have started sliding down the Eastern Conference standings lately, and with the loss of Joel Embiid, it won’t get any easier for them. They are currently fifth in the East with a 25-15 record. They lost their most recent game, are 5-5 in their last 10 and are 7-13 on the road.

The Pacers are sixth in the East with a 24-15 record, just a half-game down from the 76ers, and franchise star Victor Oladipo is expected to return later this month. Indiana won their most recent game, are 4-6 in their last 10, but they have a 15-5 record at home in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The 76ers will be looking to avenger their New Year’s Eve loss to the Pacers 115-97. Domantas Sabonis had 23 points and 10 rebounds in the blowout win, while Josh Richardson had 20 points and five assists for Philadelphia.

76ers Analysis

With Joel Embiid sidelined, the Philadelphia 76ers will be looking for other players to step up. Embiid underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn radial collateral ligament in the ring finger of his left hand.

Unfortunately for the 76ers, in their 109-91 loss on Saturday to the Dallas Mavericks, they just couldn’t get the additional help they needed to come away with a win.

“All throughout the game we had good looks,” 76ers forward Tobias Harris said. “The third quarter, we missed a bunch in a row. They were able to get out, get looks up and, at the same time, get to the free-throw line. We made a lot of mental mistakes on the defensive end, especially in the third quarter, that turned for them, really changed the game.”

Harris did his part, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds, but they’ll need more from Ben Simmons who they are really expecting to step up in Embiid’s loss. He had 11 points and 11 assists in the loss. Aside from that, the Philadelphia bench usually has several contributors, and aside from Trey Burke putting up seven points, the second unit just didn’t provide enough of a lift.

Against the Pacers, they won’t be able to have a 16-point quarter as they did in Dallas and they will have to defend well against the Pacers’ shooters.

Pacers Analysis

After losing to the Miami Heat last Wednesday, the Pacers got a nice win on Friday night 116-105 over the Chicago Bulls. The Pacers kept control pretty much throughout the game, which was impressive considering two of their best players, Malcolm Brogdon and Domantas Sabonis was out. The pair is listed as questionable for tonight’s matchup.

“I thought we did a good job of ‘next man up’ with Domas not playing tonight,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. “Myles was involved a lot more because of the absence of Domas. He was at the five position and he did a good job making plays. He took the shot when it was there. Really got us off to a good start and had an impact on this game at both ends of the floor.”

Turner had 27 points and 14 rebounds in the game. TJ Warren was the other starter who broke double digits with 17 points. The Pacers bench really provided a scoring punch the Pacers needed without Brogdon and Sabonis. Aaron Holiday had 19 points and eight assists, Doug McDermott scored 16 and Edmond Sumner added 10, which was especially helpful considering Jeremy Lamb had a rough shooting night in his limited minutes.

Key Player Matchups

Ben Simmons vs. Malcolm Brogdon

If Brogdon plays, this will be a key matchup for both teams. The Pacers could certainly use Brogdon’s scoring, but Simmons will look to limit him, and the 76ers really need a solid performance on both sides of the court from Simmons to be able to compete.

Al Horford vs. Myles Turner

It’s a matchup of old school center versus new school center as Horford and Turner match up. Turner is coming off of a huge performance, but Horford has blended into the Philadelphia offense rather seamlessly and is having a nice first season in Philly.

Daily Fantasy

Ben Simmons and Malcolm Brogdon are fantasy standout for tonight’s matchup. Simmons is available for $8.2k on FanDuel and is projected for a big game with 43.5 points. Brogdon, if he plays, is available for $6.5k, really also putting him in line as a value player, and is expected to finish with 36.1 fantasy points.

Aaron Holiday could be a nice value add to your lineup at $5.2k and projected for 25.4 points.
