The Boston Celtics’ full schedule will come out on Monday at 3 p.m., but a couple more Celtics games leaked Monday morning: A Martin Luther King Day matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, and an opening night showdown against the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Lakers game came courtesy of the Athletic’s Shams Charania.
The opening night matchup, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Philadelphia radio host Anthony Gargano.
If both reports are correct, the Celtics will have a pair of marquee matchups on a pair of marquee NBA days — opening night and MLK Day are often dominated by the NBA.
The Sixers and Celtics will have plenty of bad blood, particularly in Boston — they were already rivals before Al Horford defected to Philadelphia this summer, and while Horford’s departure helped clear the cap space necessary to sign Kemba Walker, it remains to be seen whether Celtics fans will take that nuance into account when welcoming Horford back to the TD Garden. Still, the Oct. 23 showdown looks like it will take place in Philadelphia, where Philly fans will get their first look at a revamped roster, and where Celtics fans can see whether they still match up well with the Sixers (one man’s guess: Probably not without Horford!).
Less mysterious: The bad blood between Celtics fans and the Lakers. The Lakers and Celtics now have the residual rivalries both between the franchises and between the Celtics and LeBron James, as well as animosity between the Celtics and Anthony Davis, since the star big man made it abundantly clear he didn’t want to play in Boston after his trade request.
We will have much more after the schedule is released.
